With a target set for the UK to be carbon neutral by 2050, traditional boilers are coming under increasing scrutiny. Air source heat pump technology is an alternative heating solution that could replace your traditional boiler and be better both for the environment and your pocket.

Why is air source heat pump technology better for the environment?

Depending on your setup, an air source heat pump could reduce or completely end your reliance on traditional fossil fuel boilers. Using a small amount of electricity and the outside air, a heat pump can generate enough heat to produce hot water and heat your home to your desired temperature all year round.

Will an air source heat pump be better for my home?

If you currently heat your home using oil or LPG, switching to a heat pump will almost certainly save you money on your heating bills, as the small amount of electricity needed to operate a heat pump is significantly cheaper than these fuel sources in most cases. Better still, replacing your boiler with a heat pump means you won’t have to worry about arranging fuel deliveries ever again and you can even control the temperature of your home via an app, wherever you are.*

What is the cost of an air source heat pump?

There are many factors that influence the cost of installing air source heat pump technology, including which setup you have installed, the size of your house and the quality of your home’s insulation. This means that the cost of an air source heat pump will depend entirely on your home and your family.

We know that buying an air source heat pump is a big investment, but if you’re concerned about the cost we’ve got good news. To incentivise homeowners to move towards greener heating solutions, the Government has introduced the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) and Metering and Monitoring Service Package (MMSP).

What is the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)?

The Renewable Heat Incentive is a financial scheme that rewards the use of climate-friendly heating sources. Under the scheme, the Government pays subsidies to homeowners who switch from traditional heating methods (such as gas or oil boilers) to qualifying renewable options (such as an air source heat pump).

RHI payments are based on the amount of clean energy your heat pump produces and are calculated every quarter. The payments are guaranteed for 7 years after installation, during which time they are not only likely to cover the initial cost of the heat pump but may even earn more, allowing you to pocket the difference!

What is the Metering and Monitoring Service Package (MMSP)?

All our air source heat pumps are compatible with the Government’s Metering and Monitoring Service Package (MSSP). This is a service that collects data on the electricity your heat pump uses and the heat it produces for ongoing research into the technology.

Under the MMSP, you also get access to this data so you can see how well your heat pump is performing, and installers receive it to ensure your system is running as efficiently as it should. In return for allowing your heat pump’s data to be used in this way, you can receive an additional £1,610 from the Government, paid in installments over the 7 years after your air source heat pump is installed.
