Igloo Energy is on a mission to help its customers use less energy and provide them with cleaner and greener energy systems. This aligns perfectly with British Canoeing’s environmental values, so our partnership was a no brainer.

Every time a customer signs up to Igloo Energy through British Canoeing on this link, www.igloo.energy/britishcanoeing British Canoeing will receive a commission which will be ring fenced for the Clear Access, Clear Waters campaign, a fantastic initiative that is helping to make our rivers and waterways cleaner and more accessible.

Clear Access, Clear Waters

This year COVID-19 has turned all our lives upside down. The various lockdowns brought restrictions that inhibited our freedom to participate in many of the activities that we normally take for granted. With opportunities to exercise limited, the pandemic brought into sharp focus just how important it is for everyone to have easy access to green and blue space. We began to explore our local area in new ways, which led to tens of thousands of people taking to the waterways for the first time.

The Clear Access Clear Waters Charter was developed in 2018 by the paddlesport community and partners, to make a clear case for fair, shared and sustainable open access on all our waters. Access and protection of the special places we paddle is fundamental to the enjoyment of being on the water.

Our environment is facing greater threats than ever before, through declining biodiversity, climate change and plastic pollution and British Canoeing passionately believes that the only way to address the challenges our water environment faces, and begin to reverse the decline in river health, is to engage as many people as possible, creating a movement in culture to shift peoples’ behaviour to protect our waterways.

The health and wellbeing benefits of being in, on or around water are well known and well proven. Inactivity is causing all sorts of problems for young people like diabetes, obesity and other health issues - many of which can be solved by exercise and being outdoors. Fundamentally, access to the blue environment has the potential to create a deep and lasting connection with nature, encouraging even more pro-environmental behaviours in society.

With more people participating in paddlesport, British Canoeing is leading calls for Government to address the inequity in access to water in England. Not since the end of the Great Wars have people so desperately needed our countryside, both green and blue spaces, for health and wellbeing benefit. The case for fair, shared, sustainable open access to water has never been louder.

We are proud at Igloo to be supporting British Canoeing on their mission.

We are the energy supplier that wants to sell you less energy

Winter’s cold snap means a return to switching on our heating up and turning up our radiators, which inevitably (like all gas or electrical appliances) uses fuel to function. In fact, heating our homes in winter is one of the biggest influencing factors of not only bill spikes, but an increase in carbon footprints during October-April.

But unlike other energy suppliers, we are on a mission to help peoplepower and heat homes as cheaply and efficiently as possible, with minimal harm to the environment. To do this we champion technology that helps lower fossil fuel consumption and promotes greener energy alternatives such as air source heat pumps and smart thermostats.

If you’ve not come across them before, air source heat pumps are a low carbon way to heat your home, in fact they can be up to four times more efficient than traditional boilers. Because they use electricity, they benefit from the fact that electricity in Great Britain is becoming less reliant on fossil fuels. Between July 2019 and June 2020 over 50% of electricity in Great Britain was generated from sources that didn’t burn fossil fuels. By switching to using electricity to heat your home you can make a big difference to your carbon footprint.

Take control of your heating

We believe smart thermostats are the best way to control your heating. Heating a home typically makes up over 60% of the average household’s energy bill, so if you’re not controlling it effectively you could be wasting energy. Igloo Energy customers can purchase a tado° smart thermostat that uses your phone's location, weather information and open window detection to help you save. And research has shown that tado° can save up to 31% on your home's heating bill. We’ve gone one step further, sign up to Igloo Energy and we will give you a personalised savings estimate if you get a tado° smart thermostat based on information you tell us about your home and your energy use.

Happy paddling,

Team Igloo
